Its Me! @ 8:28 PM

Hey guys, Alson here updating some stuff. Its not going to be a reminder for practice or anything, just something im dedicating to ALL OF YOU! xD

Before i start, let me say thanks to KEE TENG and WEI JUAN for helping me log in, because its been quite some time since i've written anything here...

Anyways, im just posting this because I MISS THE BAND! The O Levels are still going on and all, but since most of the major papers are over, i guess its okay to post lah...Hmmm, Year 2007 is about to end reallllyyyy soon, and the Sec 4s are in the midst of their final battle, while some of you still have to go back to school for 2 weeks of lesson; mainly the Sec 3s( muahahhahahhahaa ).

Holidays are here, having band practices are eminent of course. I know a few( actually alot of you, but i prefer to deceive myself and think its only A FEW ) of you have plans for the holidays, but are unable to materialise them because of the practices and all. My point is, try your best to shelve them to later dates, or simply to dates that do not clash with the practices. I know its quite troublesome lah, but do it for the band, for mr tan, for the sake of your school, for erm....MDM KHAW also! lol...

I mean, im sure you would all like very much for the band to stay alive right, so its important that all of you all present, so that the juniors can learn and improve faster. Remember 'Together We Care And Grow', haha, its the school's motto i think, and its especially important for CCAs like the Band as we are the CCA which requires the most TEAMWORK! Teamwork means everyone is important, everyone plays an important role; this is especially true for making good music! Okay enough nagging, haha, just a few last words before i go off...

To Sec 1s:
I've known you guys since you stepped into the band, haha. Having talked to most of you, i see IMMERSE POTENTIAL in each and every one of you! For all of you to have lasted the first year means you have already passed the most important test already, which is to make it through this initial stepping stone. Whats left is to keep practising and keep going for practices so that all of you can shine! I know its quite stressful sometimes( with all the constant nagging..haha), but all of you should understand that its for your own good. Whatever that is being said to all of you is meant in goodwill, so don't take it to heart, instead take it as ENCOURAGEMENT to do better. It doesn't sound good sometimes, but thats the learning process right? Ultimately, its up to you to decide whether you want to make the best of your 4 years in HYCB, or sulk your way through. If you ask me, i would rather learn to enjoy the practices rather than keep trying to avoid them! Keep up the good work and dont forget to cooperate with your seniors ar...xD

To Sec 2s:
You guys are sure a CHEEKY bunch. Im glad that all of you have persevered and stayed in the band, and i hope that the enthusiasm i see in you guys last all the way through! Again, don't be discouraged, dont be too sensitive to criticism, be a little more thick skinned( some of you all already are, GOOD!), haha. Many of you are also beginning to play a bigger role in the band, and i hope that you can all make valuable contributions to further improve our playing standards and overall discipline. Having seen you all in band since Sec 1, i have to say that you guys have improved greatly in terms of playing standards and attitude, and sincerely wish that it continues to improve. Lastly, continue to soar to greater heights and i know all of you will turn out to be very successful in whatever you do!

To Sec 3s:
MY DEAR SEC 3s...haha. Most of you have taken up posts as committee members, SLs etc. I see many of you stepping up as leaders, proving that all of you have leadership capabilities. I think i will miss all of you the most, having played together(okay sounds abit wrong, but you get my point la..haha) and bonded together for the past 3 years. All of you have turned from the nerdy nerdy sec 1s to the fully grown young adults i see today( Also sounds abit wrong but again you get my point... xD). You guys have matured in terms of playing standards and character and some of you have truly proved me wrong in my initially impression of you. Also, all of you are about to be the senior students of the school, and im sure you guys would be exemplary role modals to your juniors! As such, i wish you people all the best in your studies and future endeavours, and hope that under your tutelage and leadership, the band can successful undertake more challenges and overcome more obstacles. Remember, if you ever need help or advice, dont be shy to actively seek out the teachers, Mr tan or even the current sec 4s that you feel comfortable with. We would always be willing to lend a listening ear or helping hand to anyone of you who needs help, same goes to any band members!

Whoa, talk so much, haha, no longer last few words, but many last words... Remember the overly-used-but-im-still-going-to-use-it-anyway- phrase ' One Band One Sound'. The fact that its so widely used means that it holds DEEP meaning and truths. Let these 4 words accompany you on your remaining journey in the band, let them be the light to guide your path, finally, let them be a constant reminder that the band cannot exist as a lone platform for a few individuals to shine, but can only exist if everyone plays a part and contributes in their own way, however big or small it may be... ...

Finally, I wish all of you good luck, and may all you continue to live up to the name of Hua Yi Concert Band!

Alson

Update:

I FORGOTTEN ABOUT MY FELLOW SENIORS, here it goes... ...

To Sec 4s
Its finally our turn to go, its finally our turn to graduate and move on with the next phrase of our lives. Its been a wonderful 4 years, 4 years filled with wonderful memories and experiences. I remember the first practice i had with all of you, i remember how we used to make fun of Mr Fahmi behind his back, and i remember how we became more and more bonded together. I remember how i got to know each and every one of you, and i am not going to forget it for the rest of my life. Its been a tough journey, its been an eventful one, we cried together, we celebrated together, but most of all, we have walked through this arduous road filled with countless obstacles that we have overcame together. I am glad to have known all of you, and you guys have left a positive impact in my life. I thank you for all the unforgettable memories that all of you have given me; it is something i value and would never exchange anything for. As we close this chapter of our lives and start a whole new one, let us continue to keep the Hua Yi Band Spirit alive, let the entire band experience accompany us through our future challenges such that all of us can look back and smile, look back and never forget how much we have accomplished within this 4 short years. I am honestly going to miss you people, and i hope all of us can still keep in contact one way or another. Finally, I sincerely apologise if i have offended any of you in any way, and wish you guys all the best in whatever you seek to accomplish in future... ...

HuaYiConcertBand was formed in the year 2000 with a strength of more than 40 committed and enthusiastic students. In the past 10 years, the Band gained much support from the school and managed to earn some awards. Perhaps the most memorable achievement came in the year 2001 when the Band won her first bronze medal at the Singapore Youth Festival(SYF) Central Judging.

Though the years, the Band preserved her standard under the direction of Mr Tan Aik Koon, the first principal trumpeter of Singapore Wind Symphony and Braddell Height Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Mr Tan is also the President of the executive committee of Singapore Wind Symphony. To date, the Band has grown to more than double her original strength and has participated in many musical exchanges with other schools. The Band has also given several public performances at places such as MacRitchie Reservoir, Chinese Garden, Istana Park, Pasir Ris Park and Paragon Orchard.

In 2003, Hua Yi Band went to her second SYF and achieved a silver medal. The Band also maintained her honour by achieving her second silver SYF medal in the year 2005. Her third and fourth silver medal was achieved in 2007 and 2009 respectively. However, it is insufficient to bask in the glory of past achievements. The Band adopts the mentality to accept new challenges and continually strive for excellence.

For the past 30 years, Mr Tan has performed extensively as first-chair or lead trumpeter in various concert bands, symphony orchestras, jazz ensembles and studio recordings. In 2000, he branched into full-time band music education and music conducting. With his vast and diverse experience and knowledge, Mr Tan has gained recognition in the music education scene, both locally as well as overseas.

Mr Tan is currently the President of the Executive Committee of Singapore Wind Symphony (3-time Gold Medal Award Winner of World Music Contest) and also the Executive Council Member of the Band Directors' Association of Singapore.
